Mallard Information

PLEASE NOTE: Send notes to mroppo@ece.uic.edu about any problems with ECE 225 on Mallard and he will fix your problem. Be sure to include your UIC netid in your note.

In order to access Mallard you need:

li>A graphical browser like Netscape (3.0 or better) or MS Internet Explorer (3.0 or better) Be sure to enable Java and JavaScript languages and "Cookies". (See NOTE_1 and NOTE_3 below)

  • A UIC netid;
  • An account on tigger (faculty or staff only) or icarus (all students);
  • To know your password on the machine above;
  • To be on the Mallard list. (See NOTE_2)

    If you do not have a UIC netid and appropriate computer account GET ONE! (If you don't have an account, you will need one; click here to find out about creating one. It takes one day.)

    If you forgot your account name or password you must go to ACCC support people to find out. We do not have and will never have that information.

    If you have accounts on both of the above machines then use the password from tigger first. If that does not work then try the icarus password.

    When you attempt to access Mallard you will need to log into ness the UIC authentication server. That is why you must have a UIC netid and icarus password. Sometimes you will get a dialogue box that complains about site certificates. Just press the continue button to go on to Mallard.

    If you know all the above go to Mallard

    NOTE_1:To enable Java and JavaScript: In Netscape go through Menu items Options:Network Preferences:Languages to enable Java and JavaScript.

    There should be something similar in MS IE. Not sure where though. Anybody who knows please send me the info.

    NOTE_2: If you have never been able to get to the Mallard site it may be that you are not in the Mallard list of users. If you have only seen the page that states something like "Site not Available - Down for Ma...." or "You are not registered for this course ..." (you may be registered but Mallard doesn't know it) then send an email to mroppo@eecs.uic.edu with your name,    UIC netid,    social security number,    and your lecture section and you will be put on the Mallard list. If you have accessed the Mallard page at least once (not the UIC netid/password authentication page but Mallard) and you are getting that "Site not Available ..." page then there is a problem with your browser setup or the site is down. Again, send me a note. Do not send notes to consult@uic.edu They DO NOT handle Mallard problems. Send notes to mroppo@eecs.uic.edu about your problems and he will contact the Mallard support people.

    NOTE_3: Your browser must accept "cookies" in order to get passed that "Site not Available ...." page. After getting past UIC authentication, Mallard (being on a "secure server") needs to send your browser an encryption key. If your machine will not accept that key then the Mallard server will not give you access. At that point it lies to you! It tells you it's not available or, in other words... "go away!"

    Get Going On Mallard! It's easy, it's fun, and the practice problems are instructive.
